There’s a ritual almost everyone recognises. You call someone. They don’t pick up. A beep sounds, and you — slightly caught off guard — scramble to say something coherent into the void. You hang up. They listen later, or they don’t. The information exchanged is minimal. The experience is, frankly, a bit awkward for everyone.
Voicemail has been with us since the 1980s. It was revolutionary then. By 2026, it’s a relic dressed up in new clothes. The question is: what comes next?
The Era That Was
To appreciate where we’re heading, it’s worth acknowledging how far we’ve already come. The history of the unanswered call is, in miniature, the history of our changing relationship with availability.
1980s – 1990s

The Transcription Leap Was Real — But Partial
Voicemail transcription was a genuinely meaningful improvement. Dialling in to retrieve messages gave way to reading them in a notification. Context and urgency became easier to assess. But transcription still requires the caller to perform. They must organise their thoughts into a monologue. They must state their name, their number, their reason for calling — all unprompted. It’s a personalised assistant that has been briefed on who you are, what you do, and what kinds of requests you typically receive. When a call comes in that you cannot take, the AI answers, introduces itself appropriately, and begins a real conversation.
The caller’s experience shifts dramatically. Instead of a beep and a blank, they have a conversation. Their needs are heard and — in many cases — addressed. The person they called receives not a voicemail but an actionable summary: who called, why, what was resolved, and what (if anything) requires a follow-up.
Building This on Asterisk: The Open-Source Advantage
Asterisk’s architecture makes it an unusually capable foundation for this kind of integration. The dialplan is flexible enough to route calls into AI-driven AGI (Asterisk Gateway Interface) scripts that connect to language model APIs. WebSocket-based real-time transcription, function calling APIs, and text-to-speech engines can all be stitched together within a well-structured Asterisk deployment.
A Simplified Flow
When a call arrives and goes unanswered beyond a defined threshold, the dialplan redirects it to an AGI application. That application opens a WebSocket stream to a speech recognition service, pipes the recognised text to an LLM with a pre-loaded system context (your “assistant brief”), and returns synthesised speech back to the caller in near real time.
The beauty of doing this on Asterisk is ownership. You control the prompts, the persona, the data flows, and the integrations. There’s no vendor lock-in to a proprietary AI telephony platform, and no sensitive call data passing through systems you haven’t vetted.
Getting It Right: The Things That Matter
The technology is there. The harder work is in the design and configuration. A few principles that separate a genuinely useful AI call assistant from one that frustrates callers:
Transparency is non-negotiable. The AI should introduce itself as an AI assistant from the outset. Callers who feel deceived don’t call back. Most people, told clearly that they’re speaking with an AI, engage with it constructively — especially if it’s demonstrably capable.
The system context is everything. The LLM is only as useful as the information it’s been given. Invest time in crafting the assistant brief: who you are, what callers typically need, what the AI can resolve, what it should escalate. Treat it like onboarding a new employee.
Graceful escalation paths. There will be calls the AI cannot handle — emotional situations, complex complaints, anything that genuinely requires a human. Build clear handoff protocols: a live transfer if someone is available, an urgent alert if not, and a promise of a prompt callback with the context already captured.
Latency is a dealbreaker. Conversation feels broken if the AI pauses for three seconds between each response. Streaming APIs, low-latency TTS, and well-tuned infrastructure are prerequisites, not nice-to-haves.
The Near Future
The developments on the near horizon push this further still. Voice models capable of nuanced emotional register — warmth, empathy, appropriate urgency — are already in early deployment. Persistent memory across calls means the AI will know that a caller rang last week about a pending order and will reference that context naturally. Proactive capabilities will allow the assistant to initiate outbound calls on your behalf: a follow-up, a confirmation, a courtesy check-in.
The framing of “unanswered call” will itself become a misnomer. No call will truly go unanswered. The question will simply be whether you or your AI handled it — and increasingly, the outcome will be the same.
